At Ettovi Candle Company, we’re committed to being an ethical business that cares for the planet. That’s why we’re moving away from traditional paraffin products, which are made from non-renewable petroleum and release carbon dioxide when burned. We also steer clear of any animal-derived ingredients, so every candle we offer meets our values. We focus on using biodegradable and recyclable materials, and ensure the packaging of the candles and wax melts are recyclable or reusable whenever possible. We won’t stock a candle unless we’ve fully confirmed it’s vegan and made from approved wax sources.

Tealights:
Our tealights are made from vegan paraffin wax sourced from a company that ensures it comes from a renewable and ethical source. This wax does not contain stearic acid, an animal by-product found in many conventional candles, making it a cleaner and cruelty-free alternative. We also use only essential oils for fragrance, never synthetic scents, making them a safer and more natural choice.

Beeswax Notice:
Most beeswax is sourced from China, which does not meet our ethical standards. We are working to source UK-produced ethical beeswax, so beeswax products are not listed as vegan at this time.

Simmering Granules:
Our simmering granules are made from natural crystal salt and are sourced from a UK-based company. They are from a fully vegan source and scented with plant-based essential oils.

1. Candle Safety:

Keep Away from Flammable Materials: Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from anything that could catch fire (e.g., curtains, paper, or fabric).

Never Leave Unattended: Never leave a burning candle unattended, and always extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep.

Use a Proper Holder: Ensure that candles are placed in appropriate holders to prevent the wax from spilling or the candle from tipping over.

Keep Candles Out of Reach of Children and Pets: Keep candles away from children and pets to prevent accidents.

Trim the Wick: Trim the wick to about 1 cm before lighting to prevent excessive flame height, which can be a fire hazard.

Burn Candles in a Well-Ventilated Area: Candles release pollutants when burned. Always ensure proper ventilation to reduce the build-up of harmful substances like carbon monoxide.

Check for Safety Marks: In the UK, candles should be CE marked (indicating they meet the EU safety standards). Always check that your candles are appropriately marked.

2. Wax Melt Safety:

Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for the safe use of wax melts, including the recommended amount to use and the type of burner.

Use a Suitable Wax Melt Burner: Never use an ordinary candle holder or anything that is not designed for wax melts. Use a proper electric or tea light-based burner.

Don’t Overfill the Burner: Only place a small amount of wax melt into the burner. Overfilling can lead to spills and create a fire hazard.

Avoid Overheating: Never leave a wax melt burner unattended, and avoid overheating the wax. Some electric burners have adjustable heat settings, which should be used carefully.

Position the Burner Properly: Ensure the burner is on a flat, heat-resistant surface and away from drafts, which can blow the flame of a tea light or cause it to tip over.

Don’t Touch the Wax: The wax can get very hot and cause burns. Wait for it to cool down before handling the burner or cleaning it.

Dispose of Wax Properly: When you want to change the wax in the burner, allow it to cool first before removing it. Wax can be disposed of in a bin once it’s hardened.

3. Simmering Granules Safety:

Our simmering granules are made from natural crystal salt and scented with essential oils.

They must be used with tealight burners on stable, heat-resistant surfaces.

Never leave simmering granules unattended while in use.

Ensure good ventilation in the room to avoid build-up of fragrance or other substances.

4. General Fire Safety in the Home:

Smoke Alarms: Ensure that smoke alarms are installed in key areas of your home, particularly in or near rooms where you use candles or wax melts.

Fire Extinguishers and Blankets: It’s a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher or fire blanket nearby when using candles or wax melts in case of an emergency.

Check Local Regulations: Some areas may have specific regulations related to the sale and use of candles and wax melts, including fire safety standards.

5. Legal and Consumer Protection Standards:

Product Safety Regulations: Candles and wax melts sold in the UK should comply with general product safety laws under the Consumer Protection Act 1987 and the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

CE Marking: As mentioned earlier, look for products that have a CE mark, ensuring they meet safety standards.

Our Commitment Regarding Paraffin Wax

Ettovi Candle Company does not stock traditional paraffin wax products due to environmental and ethical concerns. The only exception is our vegan paraffin tealights, which are sourced from an ethical company using renewable resources and scented exclusively with essential oils. This allows us to offer a clean, affordable option without compromising our values.
